Regulators and Exchanges
TSX Group Home of the TSX and TSX Venture Exchange. What is the difference between the TSX and TSXV? The TSX is a pompous exchange whose listings follow the OSC's minimalist disclosure standards, while the TSXV listings are junior companies which must adhere to the investor-friendly disclosure standards of the BCSC. The TSXV also provides a great service in publishing approval notices for all manner of transactions such as private placements and asset acquisitions which allow investors to track the paper creation activities of TSXV listings. It would be reasonable to view TSX listings as investment grade (ie revenues) and TSXV listings as speculative grade, but unfortunately there are quite a few speculative listings on the TSX, which makes it harder to research them.
NASDAQ Home of NASDAQ
British Columbia Securities Commission Home of Canada's most proactive regulator which pioneered disclosure standards for junior companies designed to assist the public. Web site used to be a great information resource but has capitulated to establishment pressures.
Ontario Securities Commission Home of Canada's least proactive regulator. The OSC has consistently dragged its heels with regard to expanding disclosure standards. Its policies generally favor the establishment at the expense of both the investing public and junior companies.
Alberta Securities Commission Home of Canada's least proactive regulator. The OSC has consistently dragged its heels with regard to expanding disclosure standards.

Chartsmart is an offline "end-of-day" charting system that allows you to maintain up to 7 years of trade data on over 15,000 publicly listed Canadian and US companies. You install the program and database from a CD and update the database by clicking a few buttons that download and process the new data within a couple minutes if you have a high speed internet connection. It doesn't matter if you are getting today's trade data or several weeks' worth, it's the same simple update procedure. The product features a wide variety of technical analysis tools and is ideal for traders, but I use it as my primary research tool. For an extra fee Chartsmart will download the news release feed supplied by Market News, which not only includes all the news releases filed by Canadian companies, but also the quarterly management discussions and TSX Venture approval notices that never show up in SEDAR or the company's web site. I pay close attention to chart patterns, and when one catches my eye, I have all these news releases at my fingertips to figure out what the company does as well as its paper creation history. The best way to check out Chartsmart is to have the company ship you a CD so that you can try the 30 Day Free Trial.
