Specialty Metals |
Main |
Specialty Metals Index |
Included in this index are juniors who have either explicitly identified themselves as focused on specialty metals, or whose flagship project has a specialty metal which is dominant or critical to the potential economics of the project. Companies where a specialty metal is only a by-product credit, as is the case with nickel-cobalt and many zinc deposits which may contain indium, antimony or bismuth, have been excluded. Metals associated with iron deposits such as titanium, chromium and manganese are excluded, as are elements associated with the fertilizer industry such as phosphate and potassium. Also excluded are companies whose key projects would be normally classified as industrial or mineral. Subject to these conditions, the metals considered for this index are: rare earth elements, beryllium, lithium, tungsten, vanadium, lithium, magnesium, tin, gallium, germanium, indium, antimony, bismuth and tantalum. The rationale for this index is to highlight those metals whose demand is linked to evolving technological applications or whose supply has been historically restricted to certain regions. |
|
|
Main |
Rare Earth Index |
Included in this index are Australian and Canadian listed public companies who are focused on the exploration, development and/or production of an advanced rare earth deposit. The one exception is Neo Materials which has specialized in sourcing rare earth oxides from Chinese producers and processing them into downstream products. Neo is shifting toward developing its own rare earth supply outside of China. The index starts on Jan 2, 2004. Although some of the members owned a rare earth deposit before inclusion in the index, the timing of inclusion was based on the judgement as to when the junior publicly made its advanced rare earth project its primary focus. |
|
|
Main |
Lithium Index |
Included in this index are Canadian listed public companies who are focused on the exploration, development and/or production of brine or hardrock sourced lithium. Because only a couple lithium juniors existed at the end of 2008, the index starts on July 2, 2009. The index was constructed on May 10, 2011; companies which claimed a lithium project but are now reporting on other metal projects are excluded, as are those who include lithium in their list of "rare metals" they are seeking. |

It does not include companies where promoters in their own right such as Clive Johnson, Tony Williams or Ian Rozier are pivotal, though it does include Bob Cross companies where the presence of the Giustra people tree is evident. The index starts with 2 companies, Wheaton River, which marked Giustra's return to the resource sector in 2001 after his Lions Gate hiatus with a style very different from that which characterized "his" companies during the nineties as a principal of Yorkton, and Endeavour Financial, the merchant banking entity affiliated with Giustra. |

No provision was made for the 3 additional companies spun out on the basis of 1 share each of Global Copper, Northern Peru and Lumina Resources for each original Lumina share on May 19, 2005. The latter were added to the index based on the closing price the day they started trading. |
